In this training session, Miles Baker rides a talented 3-year-old by Show Me The Buckles, while Ty Benson works another 3-year-old prospect, breaking down the next steps in developing young rope horses.
Baker explains when and why he transitions to riding a young horse one-handed, and how that shift signals a new stage in the horse’s progression. Benson dives into the process of moving a colt from a snaffle to a curb bit, emphasizing the importance of patience and giving the horse time to understand the change.
The two also demonstrate how they properly warm up a young horse that’s been sitting, focusing on moving every part of the body and ensuring softness and responsiveness before going to work. Benson stresses the importance of “tapping into their mind” first—getting the horse’s feet moving, gaining full body control, and building mental focus before adding pressure.
