Jake Barnes and Clay O’Brien Cooper are in their 60s, and they’re figuring out the best way to maximize their time in the arena to balance their health, longevity, horses and roping ability. This practice session is a mix of speeds of steers, horned cattle and muleys and great trainer lead steers. Barnes focuses on dialing in his good horse, throwing sharp head loops around the horns and handling cattle on a variety of catches. Cooper works on his position and his timing on the variety of steers he ropes, as well as managing his horse’s corner and momentum throughout the run. Cooper addresses when to throw and how to judge separation in heeling. Plus, you’ll get to see one of the rare occurrences where the Champ misses a steer, so he breaks that down, too.
