Roping Through It with Joseph Harrison

Joseph Harrison breaks down the plane of the rope and the difference between having more depth in your swing versus keeping the rope flatter. When there is a lot of dip in the rope, he explains how you have to change your last swing and bring it up to get the rope delivered where you need it. Harrison also talks about how changing that last swing can affect the way your horse works. For lower-numbered ropers, he likes to see a big, open and even swing that stays at a consistent speed and feels comfortable. He also discusses how recording runs with camera-equipped sunglasses can be a valuable teaching tool. Harrison was able to make a run while wearing them and then have his student watch the footage to see where he was, how he got into position and how he stayed there. Timing and feel are difficult things to teach because so much of it is learned through experience. Harrison explains why getting out there and doing it is such an important part of developing those skills.
