Joseph Harrison breaks down the fundamentals of building and delivering an effective heel loop. He explains the three parts of the loop: the tip for aim, the spoke for navigation and the bottom strand for the brakes. He also explains how each part affects the rope's movement. Harrison explains how he swings and delivers his loop with the goal of getting the rope over the steer's back in the turn. He breaks down the rope mechanics behind his heel loop and why simply swinging and delivering the rope does not always produce the desired result. When it comes to finding the target, Harrison does not focus directly on the steer's legs or hocks. Instead, he watches the steer's tailhead. As the tailhead begins to lift, that is his cue to put the rope down. Harrison explains how learning to rope an "area" rather than chasing the legs can lead to a more consistent heel shot.
